When Don began going to science fiction, comic book, fantasy, etc. conventions, he sometimes entered their costume contests dressed as various super-heroes and monsters (today it’s called “cosplay”) — and even won a few times. Again, his Mom made some of the outfits (Spy Smasher and Spider-Man). while Larry M. Byrd made the Franken Berry outfit and Larry Ivie the Captain America.
